The older I get, the smaller my circle of those who influence me becomes. The older I get, the less I compare myself to others. And the less I question whether I am too loud, or too quiet, or too outspoken on things I am passionate about. Yes, the older I get the less I care. Please don’t take this as a cynical statement. Of course I care about some things, but the reality is that one can drive themselves mad with caring to fit into each and every box placed on them (unwillingly) by others.
Boxes for my womanhood, my ethnicity, my profession, my writing, and my age. The boxes keep piling on. And all the while we try to cramp ourselves into them and look around for someone to validate that we are squeezing into them completely. Honey, validation is for parking.
“What if no one reads my work? “
“What if no one values my opinions and experiences of the world?”
“What if no one appreciates the gifts I believe God has given me? “
Thoughts we all have in one shape or another. I saw a post today that spoke so much life to me, “Everyone is not your audience. That doesn’t mean you’re not interesting; it means you’re not for everybody. And that’s fine.” Oh the liberation! We can finally stop looking to be liked and loved by everyone and instead focus on one who loves us unconditionally. You will never be “too much” or “not enough” for God and that my friends is a beautiful thing.
Isn’t such a wonderful thing when you witness someone who is confident in themselves, their craft, or their business? So confident they don’t sense the need to compete against others or tear others down in order to build themselves. Let’s aim for that.
If you were looking for permission to use your talents and gifts, please take this as your permission! I am excited to see all that will come from your aspirations. I am also taking this as my permission to do more here on the blog as well as start a Youtube channel (more to come on that). These are all things that I planned to do, but was too busy squeezing into boxes ;). I would like to be more personal with you all as well, feel free to comment below or email me how you plan to start using your gifts. Contact information is in the “About Me” tab above.
“A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.”
